Assessments

Why use psychological assessments

As part of the intake procedure it is likely that several questionnaires will be filled out to get an overall idea of your symptoms and behavioural functioning (or that of your child). This process is often repeated several times throughout treatment and at the end of treatment, to assure symptoms have significantly decreased. Sometimes a more thorough assessment can be helpful, especially to avoid missing important information and to (re)direct treatment.

Diagnosing

An assessment does not always lead to a diagnosis. An assessment can simply be used to set a baseline at the start of treatment, or a client may not meet the criteria for a diagnosis.

Contrary to popular belief, not all psychologists are keen on ‘labelling’. I understand that you can feel concern that if a diagnosis is suggested and/or diagnostic criteria are met, this can become a stigma for yourself or for your child. However, in the case of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Dissociation, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Learning Disorders (e.g. dyslexia) a diagnosis can work hugely in the client’s favour as adjustments can be made in different areas to increase success experiences and increasing overall quality of life.

Additionally, some diagnoses are accepted by WorkCover or the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). In case of the NDIA, this could mean that you or your child are eligible to receive support from the government using the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

As part of the diagnostic process, I often work  together with other specialities, such as a (child) psychiatrist, Occupational Therapist, Speech Therapist and/or paediatrician. This if, of course, only after you have given your written consent.

Which assessments are possible

I provide assessments for children and adolescents who need an academic capacity test (incl. IQ), because they are experiencing learning or attention difficulties and/or may be gifted. I also provide thorough ADHD and ASD assessments and make sure to rule out other causes for behavioural problems before diagnosing a child.

If during our assessment it becomes clear that you(r) child may require further assessment, I may suggest you see a local specialist, such as a neuropsychologist or (child)psychiatrist. For the assessment of dyslexia, I will refer you to a friendly clinical psychologist on the Sunshine Coast or you are welcome to find a clinician of your preference.
